Yes, we did a double-take, too.
La Prensa San Diego is reporting that Wal-Mart heiress and multi-billionaire Christy Walton, a fan of Rudolfo Anaya's classic New Mexico novel Bless Me Ultima, has created a production company to finance a film based on the book.
The La Presna article laments the unusual partnership, predicting the film will tank the way several other Latino novels set to film have tanked.
We think it's a little early to ring death bells for Ultima, and we find the fact that Ms. Walton has decided to circumvent Hollywood altogether very interesting indeed. We suspect Ms. Walton is more aware than most Hollywood execs are of the enormous market potential of the also enormous acculturated/mainstream Latino population in the nation (after all, we buy lots of stuff from her).
We commend Ms. Walton for her excellent taste in literature, and for her capitalist pragmatism; we think she's on to something here, and we wish the film great success. After all, the more successful English-language Latino films we have, the more likely it is that there will be more.
Bless us, Wal-Mart?

I'm excited to see this project!
Roberto Rodriguez might approach her for some Machete distribution bucks. Hooray for her!
